Holiday Acne
If you are like me, you ate everything this holiday season and ended up with a few pimples. Why did we get pimples this holiday season? The culprit is all those delicious cakes and cookies we received as gifts. How can cakes and cookies give us pimples? Cakes and cookies are considered high glycemic foods, which contribute to acne by increasing insulin levels. High insulin levels increase male hormones, increase oil production and increase skin cell production. All this causes more acne. What else probably contributed to our breakout? The answer is all the cheese, ice cream and cream sauces? Yes, dairy is another culprit for acne. Why milk? Milk contains tons of hormones and unnecessary proteins. Think about this. Cow’s milk is engineered to nourish a 60-pound calf to become a 600-pound cow. The whey protein in cow’s milk also has a male hormone effect that causes acne. Also, since we ate out a lot, the high salted foods did not help. All the MSG, salt and iodine in chips, seaweed on my sushi, and snacks have been shown to increase acne.
Thus, studies have shown diet can contribute to acne. These are the foods you should avoid if you want to decrease your acne:
- High glycemic foods such as baked goods, processed foods and foods that contain sweeteners such as corn syrup, maltodextrins, dextrose, glucose and artificial sweeteners.
- Milk and any dairy products such as cheese and ice cream.
- Iodine and salt – These are foods that contain MSG and a lot of salt: snacks, chips, egg yolks, seaweed and condiments such as ketchup and barbecue sauce.
